Donald Trump's former national security advisor has been given a reprieve in his sentencing hearing on charges of lying to the FBI. The decision on whether he'll go to jail has been delayed until March. Michael Flynn was flanked by protesters as he arrived at court in Washington, where he stood by his decision to plead guilty.

In the meantime, Donald Trump has agreed to shut down his personal charity, amid accusations he used the foundation for personal and political benefit. The decision is part of a deal between the president's lawyers and the New York attorney general, who is investigating Mr Trump and his three eldest children, alleging "persistently illegal conduct" at the foundation. It will be shut down and all of its remaining assets will be distributed to other non-profit groups.

Senior Nationals are pushing for a woman to run in the Plum Victorian seat that's been left empty by disgraced MP Andrew Broad. Mr Broad says he won't re-contest the seat of Mallee, after revelations the married man used a dating website to meet a young girl or younger woman while on a personal trip in Hong Kong. Just two of the nationals' 22 federal members are women.
